This paper discusses the first two stages of three-year-long project VIREAS (Virtual Reality in Keeping Seniors Active). Unlike other technologies, virtual reality (VR) can provide the user with an almost perfect feeling of physical being in an imaginary world or a place representing reality, and the user can actively influence the storyline. Those aspects predetermine using VR as a tool to keep seniors active, which is the purpose of VIREAS. The results of that project are creating VR software dealing with key needs of old age, and producing a conceptual manual guiding how to use VR as a tool for keeping seniors active.
