It has been well known that Japan is one of the most aging countries in the world, and this has affected social, economic and political affairs in various ways to cope with this demographic change.
Industrial products design also had to change their policies of making products from technology-oriented to human-oriented design. Accessible design was one of these movements which positively took into account the needs of older people and people with disabilities to make products, in particular consumer products, easy and comfort in use by those people.
Good collaborations between government, academy and industry were formed and started to develop the concept and methods of accessible design being based on ergonomics and to disseminate them in the form of industrial standards.
Now more than 40 accessible design standards have been developed in Japan, and the activities have been extended into the international level such as ISO. Accessible design is one of crucially important fields in ISO too and a number of ISO standards have already been developed being based on Japanese experiences.
In this talk, the concept and methods, some examples, and history of Japanese and ISO standardization of accessible design are to be presented.
