Professor Karel Schmeidler, PhD. is a professor and researcher in the Institute of Forensic Engineering at the University of Technology (VUT) in Brno, and also in the Transport Department at the Faculty of civil Engineering, Technical University in Ostrava (TU-VSB). He directs the REDECO - Urban Space and Transport Analysis Laboratory where he and his students work on the relationship between the urban environment and planning and the spatial and travel behaviour of individuals. He is developing spatial analysis methods and simulation models, modelling built movement and studying the formation of sustainable urban areas. Professor Schmeidler has more than 30 years’ experience in architectural, urban and transport research and related planning fields. He has worked on several national and international research projects involving urban sociology, architectural design, urban planning, integrated land use and transport planning research, including the EC projects SIZE, ASI, CONSENSUS, TRAINER, ADVISORS, many European Science Foundation COST Action projects, Central European University Fellowships (Soros Foundation Projects) and EU HUMANIST Centre of Excellence and many important national projects funded by the Czech Grant Agency and some Czech ministries (e.g. Ministry of Education, Transport, Local Development and Environment) and universities (ETH Zurich, UCE Birmingham, ČVUT Praha, VUT Brno and VŠB-TU Ostrava). He has dozens publications encompassing sociology, urban design, urban sociology, planning and transport fields, and has authored or contributed to several books, including Sociology for Architects and Town planners (Brno 1997 and reprinted 2001) and Mobility and Accessibility for Elderly, (Novpress 2009) Urban Mobility and Accessibility, (2010, Key Publishing, Ostrava and Human Machine Interface: Impact and effect of IVIS and ADAS in car. 1st ed.
